Move to Create One Water Agency for Santa Clarita Passes Senate

A bill to consolidate water agencies in the Santa Clarita Valley moved to the California Assembly after passing this week in the state Senate. Senate Bill 634, introduced in February by State Sen. Scott Wilk (R-Lancaster) would dissolve Castaic Lake Water Agency and Newhall County Water District and replace them with a single water agency. In December, the boards of the public districts approved taking that step. Business groups, including the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce, back the water agency consolidation, which was approved 32-0 by the senate on Wednesday. Changes to the bill include dissolving Valencia Water Co., whose stock has been owned by Castaic Lake since 2012 but operated by a separate board, and making it part of the new consolidated water agency. The senate vote reflects taking a big picture approach to protecting water resources, Wilk said. “Creating a modern and transparent water district in the Santa Clarita Valley will not only result in cost savings for ratepayers, but will result in an environmentally sustainable system as well,” Wilk said in a statement.
