VALLEY BRIEFS Entrepreneurs Honored Three Valley business leaders have been recognized with 2003 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards for their contributions to the business community. The awards make the three eligible for E & Y;’s National Entrepreneur of the Year award, which will be announced at a banquet in Palm Springs Nov. 22. The winners are: John Dorman, chairman and chief executive officer of Digital Insight Corp. in Calabasas for his work growing the financial services firm to more than 20 times its size in five years. Adrienne Morea, president of Atlas Homewares in Glendale for her attention to detail, business planning and the quality of her designs for the hardware market. Sara Miller McCune, publisher and chairman of Sage Publications Inc., in Thousand Oaks, for using only $500 to create the company which publishes more than 300 journal and 500 book titles. High Hospital Rating The emergency room at Glendale Adventist Medical Center has been chosen as one of the hospital’s top performing units by Professional Research Consultants, the hospital’s patient satisfaction consultants. The hospital received PRC’s 4 Star Customer Service award for emergency services, given annually to healthcare facilities scoring in the top 25 percent of PRC’s national database and rated as “Excellent” for overall quality of care. Winery Makes Progress Although it has begun to mend fences with its neighbors, Agua Dulce Vineyards still must comply with several conditions before it is allowed to reopen, county officials said. The operation was shut down by the county on April 14 citing zoning violations and neighbors’ complaints about noise and traffic. Nine out of 34 conditions have to be met before vineyard operations can be resumed, said John Calas, a county land use regulation administrator. Vineyard officials have had lengthy meetings with neighbors and representatives of county Supervisor Michael Antonovich. “The applicant and the neighbors have worked diligently to come to an agreement to the operations of the vineyards,” said Millie Jones, senior deputy to county supervisor Michael Antonovich. Despite improved relations, no public hearing has yet been set before the regional planning commission for Agua Dulce Vineyards to obtain a conditional use permit to resume operating. However, Jones expects that a tentative date for the public hearing may be set for as early as September. Losses at PerfectData PerfectData Corp., the struggling maker of computer and office care maintenance products, lost $148,000 or $0.02 per share on sales of $451,000 in the company’s fourth quarter ended March 31. The Simi Valley-based company’s results, just announced at the end of June, included expenses attributed to PerfectData’s ongoing efforts to merge with an Israeli company, SuperCom Ltd. Sales during the period were flat compared with the fourth quarter of last year. For the year, PerfectData reported a net loss of $642,000 or $0.10 per share on sales of $2 million. That compares with a loss of $795,000 or $0.13 per share on sales of $1.7 million in fiscal 2002. Earlier this year, PerfectData signed a letter of intent to merge with SuperCom. That deal is still pending.
