DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. received two technical achievement awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for digital tools used in making animated and live action feature films. The Glendale studio was recognized for the foliage system and OpenVDB data management system that were used in “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” the DreamWorks film nominated in the best animated feature category for the Oscars. The foliage system assists in the detailed rendering of leaves, trees and other plants. The system was developed in 2001 for the studio’s first “Shrek” movie. OpenVDB is a set of digital tools that manages the data for creating complex visual effects including water, smoke, fire and dust. Visual effects studios Industrial Light & Magic and Weta Digital have used the tools in live action films. The academy presented the Scientific and Technical Achievement Awards to 58 recipients on Feb. 7 in Beverly Hills. The Academy Awards for actors, actresses, directors, best film and other categories take place on Feb. 22. “I want to congratulate our engineers and artists on their Technical Achievement Awards that recognize outstanding innovation in the development of tools and technology that enhance the industry’s creative storytelling ability,” DreamWorks Chief Technology Officer Lincoln Wallen said in a prepared statement. The June sequel has been a rare recent hit for the studio, earning nearly $620 million at the global box office. Shares closed down 22 cents, or just more than 1 percent, to $19.81 on the Nasdaq exchange.
