The estate of a deceased engineer who worked at the predecessor company to Northrop Grumman Corp. has donated $2.3 million to California Lutheran University to fund programs in science, education and religion. Wilbert Carlson, a Camarillo resident who died last year at age 84, and his wife Darlene, who died in 2013, left the money to the Thousand Oaks private school. A $1.4 million gift will provide an endowment for the youth and family ministry program. The couple also left $584,700 toward the construction of a science building, $300,000 for a summer research program in chemistry and $40,000 for an endowed scholarship for aspiring teachers. Will Carlson began working at Northrop Corp. in Newbury Park in 1967. He retired as manager of manufacturing and engineering in 1988. Darlene Carlson worked for an electronics manufacturing company and an aluminum production shop. The couple had a daughter Dee, who earned a bachelor’s degree from Cal Lutheran in 1978. She died in 2009 at the age of 52. The Carlsons established the teaching scholarship in memory of their daughter.
