The world’s first all-electric articulated bus will roll into service Friday in Lancaster, the Antelope Valley Transit Authority has announced. The 60-foot bus was built in Lancaster by BYD Motors Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of Chinese electric vehicle and battery maker BYD Motors Ltd. First delivered to the transit authority in May, the bus has since undergone preparation for service including being outfitted with technology for data collection, performance tracking and surveillance, the transit authority said. The bus has the capacity to carry 113 riders total, with 55 seats and standing room for up to 58, the transit authority said. It can travel 200 miles on a single charge. Passengers will begin boarding the bus at 9:40 a.m. on Friday at Sgt. Steve Owen Memorial Park, the transit authority said. The vehicle will depart at 10:01 a.m. and will travel along local Route 1, which runs between Lancaster and Palmdale. All rides aboard the bus will be free throughout the day, and passengers will receive buttons to commemorate the event. BYD is building an additional 28 electric buses for the transit authority, including 12 more articulated buses and 16 45-foot commuter coaches, according to the transit authority’s website. The transportation firm serves roughly 450,000 people in a 1,200 square mile territory in northern Los Angeles County.
