Semtech 4Q Earnings Up

Semiconductor manufacturer Semtech Corp. announced Monday that its fourth quarter income had increased 9 percent over the same period a year ago. Net income for the Camarillo-based company was $13.3 million, or 18 cents per diluted share, on net sales of $64.4 million for the fourth quarter ending Jan. 29. That is up from income of $12.1 million, or 16 cents per diluted share, on net sales of $58.4 for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2005. Net income for the full fiscal year was $43 million, or 57 cents per diluted share, on $239.4 million. That is a 26 percent decrease from the $58.9 million net income, or 75 cents per diluted share, on net sales of $253.6 million for fiscal year 2005. The company saw a two percent decrease in new orders compared with the third quarter but an increase in orders of 26 percent compared with the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2005. Semtech Corp. analog and mixed-signal semiconductors are used in computer, industrial and communications applications.

Bank of Santa Clarita Sees Improvement

Bank of Santa Clarita reported assets and new loans all rose in the fourth quarter of 2005 compared to the like period last year. The bank, which opened its doors in the fourth quarter of 2003, reduced its losses in the period, reporting a net loss of $313,000 for the quarter including a provision of $201,000 for unfunded loan commitments. The bank had no non-performing or delinquent loans as of Dec. 31. The net loss compares with a loss of $797,000 in the comparable period last year. Assets in the fourth quarter totaled $62.6 million versus $22.3 million as of Dec. 31, 2004. New loans for the fourth quarter totaled $14 million.

MTA Has Valley Opening

Lancaster Mayor Frank C. Roberts is stepping down from his spot on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Board of Directors creating a vacancy for a San Fernando Valley representative. Glendale City Councilman Ara Najarian and La Canada-Flintridge City Councilman David Spence have announced they are interested in filling the position. The appointment to the MTA board is made by the Los Angeles County Division of the League of California Cities. A representative for the North County-San Fernando Valley sector must be an elected official and Roberts is reportedly not seeking re-election in next month’s city election. The area Roberts represents stretches from La Canada-Flintridge to West Lake Village and from Malibu to Lancaster.

Target Renews With Cherokee

Cherokee Inc. said today that Target Corp. has extended its licensing agreement with the company through January, 2008. Target currently sells Cherokee brand apparel, accessories and other products from the Cherokee stable. Cherokee, a licensor and brand management company based in Van Nuys, also holds licensing agreements with Tesco, Zellers and Mervyn’s, among others.

Van Nuys Students Tour Wells E-Bus

By Vanessa Herman STAFF REPORTER Five elementary school winners of an essay contest sponsored by Valley Presbyterian Hospital were awarded $100, a savings bond and tours of the Wells Fargo E-Bus on Friday. Wells Fargo also gave the winners, Maria Palacios, Damaris Urrutia, David Martinez, Moujan Hekmatshoar, and Enrique Martinez, $100 savings bonds and gift baskets. Tracy Talley, CFO of Valley Presbyterian personally gave the winners with $100, which will be used by the students to start a savings account at Wells Fargo. Winners were selected from three fourth grade classes at Columbus Elementary School, where they were asked to write essays dealing with the importance of saving money. The essays dealt with topics like saving money for college and giving back to the poor. All participants received an award for their efforts. Valley Presbyterian developed the contest with Wells Fargo, part of the bank’s community efforts include financial education. The nationally-touring Wells Fargo E-Bus is a mobile high-tech education training center that includes sixteen Internet terminals for online access, six large plasma screens and two small LCD screens for audio visual training. The contest, originally scheduled for August, was delayed due to Hurricane Katrina efforts, when the bus made its way to New Orleans and assisted those with no computer access with online banking. As part of the non-profit hospital’s mission, Talley said, “It’s important for us to give back to the community.”

Homestore Posts Loss

Payment of legal fees related to litigation led Homestore Inc. to report a $4.6 million loss, or $ 0.03 per share, on revenues of $66.6 million in the fourth quarter. That compares with a profit of $6 million, or $0.04 per share, on revenues of $54.3 million in the same period the previous year. For the full year 2005, the company earned $234,000, or $0.00 per share on revenues of $252.6 million, compared with a loss of $7.9 million, or $0.06 per share, on revenues of $216.9 million the previous year. The fourth-quarter loss reflected legal expenses of $5.9 million in a settlement with a former officer; and $1.8 million to settle a lawsuit. Homestore, Inc. announced last month that it would change its name to Move, Inc. during the second quarter of 2006.

3D Systems Posts Record Revenue

3D Systems Corporation reported net income of $6 million on revenues of $44.1 million in the fourth quarter of 2005, compared with earnings of $3.1 million on revenues of $38.3 in the previous year. In the fourth quarter, the company took advantage of a $2.5 million non-cash tax benefit to increase net income, which was offset by $1.2 million in relocation costs related to plans to move the company’s headquarters to Rock Hill, S.C.
