Capstone Posts Lower Net Loss

Capstone Turbine Corp. reported a net income loss of $9.3 million for its fiscal year first quarter ended June 30. The loss is a 14 percent decrease from the same reporting period in 2005 when the microturbine system producer had a loss of $10.8 million, or $0.13 per diluted share, on revenues of $3.8 million. The first quarter loss includes an aggregate of $0.8 million of stock-based compensation expense due primarily to the company’s adoption of statement of financial accounting standards No. 123R. First quarter revenues were $6.5 million, a decrease of 13 percent from the fourth quarter fiscal 2006 revenue of $7.6 million. It was a 70 percent increase from the first quarter of the previous fiscal year. The year-over-year growth in revenue indicates that demand for microturbines is growing, said company interim President and CEO Mark Gilbreth, in a statement. “The foundation for operational success is in place,” Gilbreth said. “The task ahead of us now is to further develop and expand our sales in our key markets.”

2 Valley Intersections to Get Traffic Cops

Traffic officers will be posted at two additional Valley intersections under the terms of an expanded plan to address traffic congestion in Los Angeles, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced Tuesday. Dickens Street and Sepulveda Boulevard in Sherman Oaks and Topanga Canyon Boulevard and State Route 118 in the northwest corner of the Valley will receive the new officers, who will work from 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. each day, the mayor said. Citywide, the expansion adds 20 officers to 13 additional intersections, bringing the total to 70 of the number of officers posted at intersections across the city. The officers, which fall under the city’s Department of Transportation, help control traffic, assist pedestrians, assess signal length and maintain order in intersections.

Net Flat at Beverly Hills Bancorp

Beverly Hills Bancorp Inc. reported net income was flat for the three months ended June 30 at $3.3 million or $0.15 per diluted share, reflecting a decline in net interest income. Bank officials noted that loan originations decreased substantially in the first quarter to $63.2 million compared to $121.7 million in the year-ago period due to higher interest rates, which reduced refinancings and “increased competitiveness in loan pricing.” Deposits as of the end of the second quarter totaled $703.5 million, up from $565.2 million for the same period last year. Beverly Hills Bancorp, the parent of First Bank of Beverly Hills in Calabasas, said assets at the bank rose to $1.5 billion versus $1.4 billion for the comparable period a year ago.

Local Firms Get Venture Funding

Two local biomedical companies helped drive the biggest quarter for investments since the first quarter of 2002, a report on venture capital investments revealed. The dollar value of investments rose to $6.3 billion in the second quarter of 2006, fueled largely by biotech and medical devices deals, along with funding in the industrial and energy company and networking and equipment sectors, according to The MoneyTree Report released by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association based on data from Thomson Financial. The second quarter funding represents a 2 percent increase over the prior quarter based on dollar amounts and a 5 percent increase over the prior quarter based on the number of deals, the report noted. First-time financing also reached a five-year high. Among the companies receiving funding in the quarter were Woodland Hills-based Aestherx, a medical product research and development company that received $20 million; and Camarillo-based Lucix Corp., a maker of dielectric resonator oscillators that received $3.7 million in funding. The biotech sector in all saw fundings increase 10 percent to $1.8 billion, representing 185 deals for the quarter.

TVN to Distribute Lionsgate Films

TVN Entertainment will distribute films from Lionsgate Entertainment via video-on-demand, the company announced Monday. The multi-year deal includes all new releases from Lionsgate as well as from its library of more than 7,500 film and television titles. Lionsgate is innovative with its video-on-demand strategy, said Doug Sylvester, chief operating officer with Burbank-based TVN. “VOD customers have long wanted access to hit movies on a timelier basis so we are delighted to support Lionsgate’s strategy as well as their creative packaging and marketing initiatives for library titles,” Sylvester said. The agreement gives Santa Monica-based Lionsgate access to TVN’s Adoniss asset management system, which provides control over the distribution platform and allows updating and modifying data even after a title has been uploaded. The agreement is another step in Lionsgate’s commitment to distribute content through new digital media opportunities, said Jon Ferro, executive vice president of administration and TV distribution. “TVN’s leadership in encryption, watermaking and security supports our decision to make our movies available in VOD closer to theatrical release than ever before,” Ferro said.
