LANG Newspaper Wins Pultizer

The Daily Breeze, the daily newspaper covering Los Angeles County’s South Bay, has won a Pulitzer Prize for local reporting. The paper won the award for its coverage of the Centinela Valley Unified School District. The newspaper’s investigation focused on now-former school district superintendent Jose Fernandez, whose compensation package amounted to more than $663,000. He was fired after the Breeze’s investigation. Reporters Rebecca Kimitch and Rob Kuznia, and Daily Breeze City Editor Frank Suraci were the recipients of the prize “for their inquiry into widespread corruption in a small, cash-strapped school district, including impressive use of the paper’s website,” according to Columbia University, which announced the prizes Monday. The newspaper is a member of the Los Angeles Newspaper Group (LANG), which includes the Los Angeles Daily News in Woodland Hills. It is owned by Digital First Media in New York, which owns 800 daily and weekly papers and news websites that serve 15 states. Two Los Angeles Times reporters also won Pulitzers: Fresno-based reporter Diana Marcus for her coverage of California’s drought and Mary McNamara for her television criticism.
